Every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM, Torre San Giovanni hosts the “Salento Craft Markets”, a weekly event celebrating local creativity, craftsmanship, authenticity, and tradition. Located along Corso Annibale, near the central Piazzetta Eventi, the market showcases handmade creations by local artisans and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the true meaning of “Made by Hand in Salento.”

The Salento region is a land rich in history and traditions, and its local craftsmanship is one of the most fascinating expressions of its cultural identity. Every handmade object tells a story of knowledge and skills passed down from generation to generation.
Visitors can discover a wide variety of traditional crafts, including ceramics, Lecce stone, papier-mâché, textiles, and embroidery. Each creation reflects the passion, patience, and talent of the artisans who keep these ancient traditions alive.

The Lecce papier-mâché tradition, whose origins date back to the 17th century, is particularly renowned. In the workshops of Lecce, artisans transform this humble material into expressive statues, religious figures, masks, and decorative pieces. Watching these creations take shape is an opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary craftsmanship behind this traditional art.

Another distinctive material of the region is Lecce stone, a soft limestone that has been used for centuries to build churches, historic palaces, and the characteristic dry-stone walls of Salento. Today, skilled stone carvers continue to transform it into sculptures, home décor, and decorative objects, demonstrating its remarkable versatility.
Traditional textiles and embroidery are another important part of Salento’s craft heritage. In small villages throughout the countryside, traditional weaving techniques are still preserved, with artisans using wooden looms to create tablecloths, bed linen, towels, and other beautifully decorated fabrics. Each handmade piece is unique and represents hours of dedication and a tradition rooted deep in the history of the region.
Buying a piece of Salento craftsmanship means taking home more than a beautiful and original object. It means bringing home a small piece of the culture, history, and soul of Salento. Whether it is a ceramic creation, a Lecce stone sculpture, or a handwoven textile, every piece tells a story of tradition, passion, and talent.
